Il Posto Documentos is opening applications for its new Research Grant for the first time. The Il Posto Research Grant is an opportunity for early-career researchers to engage with the Il Posto Documentos Collection (Il Posto Archive, Il Posto Library, and Artists' Books Collection) and/or the works in the Il Posto Collection.

Applications are now open for the Il Posto Research Grant – Winter-Spring 2023 Call

ABOUT THIS CALL 

For this first call for applications, the future fellow is invited to conduct curatorial research on the Il Posto Archive, which will culminate in an exhibition in the new Il Posto Documentos exhibition room, along with a conference and a short digital publication reporting on the research carried out. This project must be carried out over a period of four months, between June 11 and October 13, 2023. The exhibition resulting from the research process will take place during the week in which the research process ends and will run until January 2024.

 

BENEFITS

To develop their research and writing project, the Il Posto Research Grant recipient will receive:

  • $200,000 Chilean pesos per month for the duration of the four-month fellowship.
  • Access to the resources available in the Il Posto Collection, the Archive, the Library, and the Artists’ Book Collection at the Il Posto Documentation Centre.
  • Support from the Il Posto team to develop their research.
  • A budget of 300,000 Chilean pesos to cover the costs associated with setting up the exhibition to be presented in the Il Posto Documentos exhibition hall at the end of your research.
  • Support in disseminating the results of their research (specifically through the publication of their text on the Il Posto website and the holding of a discussion after the end of the fellowship).

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FELLOW

The person that wins the Il Posto Research Grant in this call must:

  • Attend in person at the Il Posto Research Centre (José Miguel de la Barra 480, dpto. 201, Santiago, Chile) at least 4 hours a week during the 4 months of the fellowship duration.
  • Submit a progress report of no more than 1,000 words detailing the development of your research two months after the start of the fellowship.
  • Submit a physical or digital model of the exhibition you plan to mount in the Il Posto Documenos exhibition room one month before the end of the fellowship.
  • Present the results of your research at a conference at Il Posto immediately after the end of the fellowship.
  • Submit a text of between 2,000 and 3,000 words presenting the results of your research within two months of the end of the fellowship.

 

PROFILE OF THE FELLOW AND APPLICATION PROCESS

Anyone who is available to attend Il Posto Documentos weekly to conduct their research may apply for the Il Posto Research Grant. Applicants may be:

  • People who have completed or are pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees in the arts and humanities.
  • Researchers who have conducted research or show interest in topics related to contemporary Chilean and Latin American art.
  • People who have experience in curatorial projects or who show an interest in curatorial practice.

  • What is the Il Posto Research Grant?
    The Il Posto Research Grant is a benefit awarded by Il Posto to early career researchers who wish to develop research based on the works of the Il Posto Collection and/or the material available at the Research and Documentation Centre of this institution (Il Posto Archive, Il Posto Library and Artists' Books Collection).
  • What types of projects does the Il Posto Research Grant fund?

  • What documents are in the Il Posto Archive? And how can I access them?
    The Il Posto Archive houses more than 500 documents produced between the 1950s and the present day that highlight the development of national artistic production. It currently comprises two documentary collections: the “Chilean Artists” Collection, which brings together catalogs, brochures, magazines, letters, and other types of documents related to important national artists, writers, and critics (Gonzalo Díaz, Eugenio Dittborn, Nelly Richard, Justo Pastor Mellado, Francisco Smythe, among others); and the “Publications” Collection, which brings together national and international publications dedicated to reflection on art and cultural criticism (Artes & Textos, La Separata, Third Text, Revista de Estética, Revista de Crítica Cultural, among others).   • Can I apply for the Il Posto Research Grant with a project that does not involve working with the Il Posto Archive?
    No. One of the requirements for applying for the Il Posto Research Grant is to submit a research project that involves working with at least one document from the Il Posto Archive.
  • Can I apply for the Il Posto Research Grant with a project that involves working with documents from the Il Posto Archive and material from other archives?
    Yes, it is acceptable if your research addresses documents from archives outside of Il Posto.
  • Can I use other resources available at Il Posto to develop my research project?
    Yes, the Il Posto Research Grant recipient may use resources available in the Il Posto Collection, the Il Posto Library, and the Artists' Books Collection to conduct their research.

    Those interested in applying for the Il Posto Research Grant should complete our application form and submit it in Word format to info@ilposto.cl by May 22, 2023.
  • What can I do if I don't understand any of the sections of the application form?

IMPORTANT: Questions sent to our email must relate strictly to the sections of the form, not to the content of the research projects.
  • What are the requirements to apply for the Il Posto Research Grant?
    The only requirement to apply for the Il Posto Grant is to be available to attend Il Posto Documentos (José Miguel de la Barra 480, apt. 201, Santiago, Chile) in person for at least four hours per week. However, the following are not eligible to apply for the Il Posto Research Grant: -People who are members of the Il Posto team or board of directors. -People who are related up to the third degree of consanguinity or second degree of affinity with any member of the Il Posto team or board of directors.
  • Is it necessary to have a postgraduate degree to apply for the Il Posto Research Grant?
    No, a postgraduate degree is not required to apply for the Il Posto Research Grant, although it will be positively evaluated (for more information, see the project evaluation guide).

  • Where will the results of the research be exhibited?
    The result of the Il Posto Research Grant will be exhibited in the new exhibition space at Il Posto Documentos. This small room, measuring approximately 20 square meters, will be available for transformation depending on the curatorial requirements and the allocated budget. The room will have display tables available for exhibiting documents.
  • Do I have a budget to put on the exhibition?
    Yes, Il Posto Documentos will allocate a budget of 300,000 Chilean pesos for expenses associated with setting up the exhibition.
  • Will I have assistance in setting up the exhibition?
    Yes, Il Posto Documentos will assist you in creating the final project model and during the exhibition setup.
  • How long will the exhibition be on display?
    The exhibition resulting from the research carried out in the context of the Il Posto Research Grant will be on display at Il Posto Documentos for three months after the end of the Grant, i.e., between mid-October and the end of January 2023.
