Gonzalo Díaz: numbers for imagination and teaching

Throughout his life, Gonzalo Díaz maintained a constant interest in numbers and their implications. One need only look at the number of publications on this subject in his personal library to see this.

Numbers appear in his works, allowing him to establish systems of order and hierarchy, as well as to connect fields that at first glance seem as distant as theology and politics.

The number three in the triptychs, the two in the diptychs, the six or seven in the colors of the rainbow, the nine celestial categories, the fourteen stations of the Way of the Cross—these are just some of the numbers favored by the artist.

In this exhibition, we have the opportunity to access documents from his private world: notebooks, books, fold-outs, and diagrams. All of them eloquently demonstrate the importance of numerical systems not only in his creative output but also in his work as an educator of artists.

I am deeply grateful to Nury Gonzalez, Gonzalo’s wife and his executor, for allowing me access to documents and materials that would otherwise be inaccessible.
